Introduction
Offshore platforms and oil refineries use complex machineries spread over large areas. The atmosphere at such places is laden with volatile, explosive gases and petroleum fumes, making it susceptible to explosion.
An explosion can occur only when three factors viz. combustible matter such as petroleum fumes, oxygen in the air and a source of ignition such as an electric spark, together come into contact. Such a scenario is highly likely in oil & gas plants. This necessitates the use of special equipment in such an environment, so that it does not become a source of ignition.
